For Artists

This year, Sight Specific Productions’ (http://www.sightspecificprojects.com/about.html) presented “Uncharted Territories,” a month-long show featuring 18 installation works in two separate spaces as well as outdoor installations. Another Sight Specific-curated show, “under re·con·struc·tion,” is scheduled for this fall and will feature works of art that re-imagine the future of life as we know it.

Oualie Art is a studio with a focus on photo-base arts. Arts Unbound, next door to Oaulie Art, is dedicated to the artistic achievement of youth, adults and senior citizens with disabilities.

37 artists participated in the first annual Open Studio Stroll on October 10-11, and join with members of the public to create new outdoor artworks around the neighborhood.

Performance art is also a neighborhood staple. Soon to be home to the acclaimed Luna Stage company (http://www.lunastage.org/), the Valley Arts District also features a number of music and performance art venues, including the famed Cecil’s Jazz Club, and hosts annual events like the Valley Arts Music and Poetry Festival (VAMP) and Hamstock, an indie music outdoor concert.

Open Calls

  • The Valley Arts District has launched a new art project called “Site”

Public art used to refer to murals, monuments and memorials. Today it is almost anything and everything artists can think up, a broad spectrum of activities encompassing almost every aspect of our lives.

This call is open to all artists interested in creating an original permanent or semi-permanent street artwork that makes a positive contribution to the urban environment and raises awareness of the crucial role of art in public sites.

Although we encourage submissions of  "site-specific" art: works designed for a particular place, taking into account the site's physical surroundings as well as other social factors, all ideas are welcome. Our only guideline is to look for artists that can help us serve our communities to memorialize, to beautify, to address problems, to manifest ideas.

Comic art has been a great inspiration to me and I have returned to it, intentionally straddling the line between art and illustration. These works are part of the Electro Series, a fragmented narrative of the Electro robot created by the Westinghouse Corporation in 1939. The ink lines are executed on paper diagrams, salvaged form a now demolished Westinghouse factory in Newark, NJ.

Andrea DeFelice

I incorporate various media including video installation, performance, and sculpture into my process. I approach art in a way that involves an attempt to learn about something I know nothing about. The learning process must become part of the work or else it’s a waste of time. This approach can either conduct the choice of the medium, or vice versa. However, the term ‘medium’ gets a bit lost in my process, but this is not something that I’ve come to mind.

Lisa Marie Bronson

Regardless of the discipline I am working within, my artwork makes connections between everyday reality and nommo, the imminent ground of Being that underlies that reality. This piece creates space and time for people to meditate on their hearts’ desires, inviting them to speak to their own interior space and listen for a reply.

Seung Ae Kim

My vocabulary of works draws from many different sources, including the memory of growing up in a suburb of Seoul that was undergoing socio-economic changes as the city developed in the 1970s and 1980s. I have come to appreciate the transitions even as I am in a constant state of transformation as I continue to adjust to the challenges that every day brings.

Mixed media paintings, assemblages, installations, video.
As we travel, we come across opportunities, establish milestones, and collect the gems of lessons learned. We influence others along their path. Split decisions send us left or right, determining all future direction. We move like so many before us, yet each journey is unique.

Lorena La Grassa

This work represents the tension in the effort of changing the course of our existence -- the passage between reality and dream in a parallel dimension haunted by the spirits of our imagination. It transcends rationality to evoke a paranormal experience in which logic is suspended in favor of symbolism as in our dreams.

He recently returned from central France where he was artist-in–residence and has artwork on exhibit at the Gallerie Chateau de la Chassaigne, in Thiers.

Dan Fenelon

“My work infuses a blend of cartooning, street modernism and ancient tribal motifs along with an explosion of vibrant colors. Cartoons were a big influence on me growing up, and when I began to examine Egyptian hieroglyphs and Aztec codecs I made a connection between them and modern sequential art. Combining these elements with toys and other modern mass-produced objects was just the twist I was looking for to create a feeling of tribal tradition applied to modern culture.”

Seth Taylor Garrison

Seth Taylor Garrison is a complex of nouns, verbs, and adjectives arranged in some sort of logico-temporal order.  He consistently performs a patterned series of actions, involving teaching English, studying philosophy, and making art.  He enjoys textures of all shapes, sizes, and representations.  You may often find him wearing brightly colored clothes and ties.

With the use of craft and hand-made materials, these constructions become armatures on which to explore my deepest longings and concerns.

Beatrice Coron

My work tells stories. I invent situations, cities and worlds. These compositions include memories, associations of words, ideas, observations and thoughts that unfold in improbable juxtapositions. These invented worlds have their own logic and patterns. Images are conveyed through words, whether automatic writing or premeditated scenes.
