Catfish Friday Installed
Artists branch out with bold installations by Toni Thomas
This year several Catfish Friday artists expanded their creative repertoire by delving into installation and site- specific projects. Gladys Grauer, Kathleen Heron, Jody Leight and Diana Jensen made bold statements through challenging installation projects to express their views on a variety of issues, themes and personal directives.
Glayds Grauer and Jody Leight examined societal and modern issues in their installations and site-specific pieces. Gladys Grauer made us examine the growing issue of homelessness in her installation that used found objects, recycled clothing and plastic bags that were knitted and woven. Grauer turned the recycled materials into scarves, slippers and banners that were incor- porated into her engaging interpretation of living on our city streets.
Study War No More.” In her work Leight applied knitted leaves and fruits to a leafless tree branch in her interpretation of a time when war would not be the only resolve to resolving conflict. Her work can be seen at the A2 exhibit on view at Yema Gallery. Kathleen Heron literally branched out with her installa- tion for the recent Valley Arts Sculpture Garden this summer with a work that used actual tree branches. In her creation she chose to imagine the routine task of washing and drying clothes as if it were
a magical ritual. Diana Jensen spent her summer
completing a painting installation that included 100 portraits of people in varying sizes and perspectives from a found 1970’s photo album. Once completed, Jensen featured the work during the Dumbofest Open Studio tour
this past September in Brooklyn, NY. Adrienne Wheeler, Judith Salmon
and Shonda Nicholas also created engaging installations in recent exhibi- tions this year as well.
Considering the challenges creating installations pose, artists who work in this format have the opportunity to explore art making on many levels. For example the artist can select to invite viewers to ‘experience’ their work by creating an environment as in Kathleen Heron’s piece where viewers could walk around and into her installation getting a real feel for work. While artists like Gladys Grauer may opt to use content and medium to stimulate the viewer mentally and visually as the issued posed is explored through their perspective. With many options at hand one cannot help but anticipate future venues where Catfish Friday artists can explore being ‘installed’.

This year’s exhibit includes works by 3 collective artists from the Caribbean: Julia Valdes, Eira Arrate and Estela Dieppa. These artists have taken a strong interest in the collective with it’s emphasis on supporting women artists and building community among those artists. Catfish Friday arts annual also includes a second exhibition featuring the collective’s photographers. The work is on display at the IronWorks Gallery and hosted by Valley Arts.
Yema Gallery is the gallery of Catfish Friday and ARTSETC. The gallery will feature exhibitions of Catfish Friday artists and friends along with art exhibitions of the indigenous artists supported by ARTSETC.
