I create site specific artworks in traditional and non-traditional exhibition sites, guiding visitors through their everyday surroundings using unconventional means. My installations not only mark, but also interact with their host site, creating a heightened sensory experience for the viewer/occupant while reexamining the institutional and conventional aspects of the built environment in an organic manner. Typically I approach a site by analyzing its formal, functional, psychological, and social properties and boundaries, taking note of what is undeveloped or missing in the site as well as what characterizes it. I'm interested in humanizing sites and giving them a stronger sense of place by introducing warmth, intimacy, humor, visual pleasure, and physical comfort, simultaneously integrating and exaggerating the qualities inherent in the site. Using many pieces of an inexpensive, familiar material in unexpected ways is a continuous theme in my work, often resulting in trail making devices that encourage viewers to explore their environment more fully.
