All of my work is about process and discovery.
I call my work in wood “Incantatory Objects.” The goal was to create abstract sculptures suggestive of actual forms, objects that might be part of an imagined ritual or ceremony.
My starting point was the twisted human torso. From there my vocabulary of forms expanded to include curved and elongated forms as well as tubular elements. As the work developed, wood joinery, lap, mortise and tenon joints became another element defining and proscribing the work.
My latest work in PVC pipe, foam rubber, garden hoses, tubing and paint initially focused on surface and texture. Self consciously limiting myself to common industrial materials the goal is, as always, to create meaning from abstract form. Burning, melting, bending, twisting, painting and coating the PVC pipe test my ability to transform it. As the work has developed it’s become simpler and more organic.
